Ectasy of Meaning

For me the reading was hard to read in a couple of spots, but I was really interested in a lot of other areas of the reading. The first part that really caught my attention was the fact that they mentioned how placing an object in a strange place can change the way we see it. It was weird to me because my 2d class was actually just doing a project somewhat related to that. We had a sketchbook project that we had to pick an object and one of the things we had to do with it was take a picture of it in a different place. I had a pointe shoe and I placed it in the refrigerator and it made the pointe shoe so much more interesting.
Also the other thing that really got me was when the article was talking about how reusing an object made it ...not better...but something new. Also it was very interesting to me when they were talking about how Americans like to reuse things. For example a newspaper can be read one day and then the next day it's being used to wrap glass or something fragile.
Overall the reading was a long one, but it was worth getting through it, because of the parts that really had me interested.

Tuesday Lecture

Today's lecture was ok. I liked how we had three speakers throughout the lecture, but I didn't find a lot of what they had to say interesting. I really did like their work though. Especially the artwork that showed the touristy part of an area and then the real part of an area. I think I'm coming to the conclusion that a lot of the really good artist are not as good at public speaking. Which is kind of common even within myself and my classmates, but I think artists by the time they are established and in the art field they should be able to talk more fluently and easly about their own work. I already appreciate the work I saw today, but if I could've understood them more I would've had an even more appreciation for them if I could've understood the explanantion of them more. Also it isn't complelty their (the visiting artists) faults. The mic system isn't the greatest in the hall that we sit in for the lectures. Overall though I really appreciate the lectures. It gives me a chance to realize that what I am aiming for is possible. I haven't yet seen an artist I compelty do look up to but I'm pretty sure I will soon. Finally the artist from the philippeans (spelling?) was the one out of the three that stood out to me. I appreciated him invovled family and personal images into his artwork. That's all for now .

This is the result of our latest project. Our class was assigned to make a type of currency up. I had a lot of difficulty with this project, but I really learned a lot of illustrator. Plus after this we start with photoshop which I am so ready to start learning about!

The Election

I have a lot of mixed feelings on the election. Even though I am not registered for vote...which I'm really not happy about and I just keep forgetting to get around to it...but anyways the election is kind of an odd topic for me. I love Obama...I don't care what people say I think he is going to be good for this nation . Even though he doesn't have the most experience and there are always complications when it comes to who is our president...I really think he will be one of our greatest presidents. Also I'm nervous to find out who it will be. I always remembered just being excited because I've never felt strongly about who won...but this time with feeling strongly about it I am actually nervous....but who knows what will happen. This country has been thrown for so many curves I'm not sure what else we ( as a country) can't handle. We're strong and we stand up for ourselves...and overall Obama I feel, stands for that as well. All we can do is hope for the best!

Lecture for Oct. 21st

So today was another lecture at the Tyler School of Art. I never seem to catch the name of the people who are speaking, but I really enjoyed the women who came to speak today. For one her artwork was amazing. She was an abstract painter, but for once I understood someone elses abstract art. Even before she explained what the paintings were supposed to be representing, I still understood what they were supposed to be before she even started talking. Also she kept saying that the projector was messing with the colors of her pieces, but even with the distorted colors I still loved everything. The paintings had just the right amount of color. I admire this very much as well. I'm always overworking my work, when it comes to abstracting, but it was good to hear from her that it took her awhile for her to even get the hang of when a painting was done or when it needed something else. Also she could speak to a group of people very well. I really enjoyed some of the past speaker's work, but I kept saying how I wish I could've understood what thy were saying. Today this women was exellant Finally the one thing I noticed was that some of her paintings reminded me of piles of fall leaves that have fallen from trees, which I absolutly loved. If I had to money I would've bought a piece off of her today.

Self Through Context

This was one of the projects we had to do in computers. It was a lot fun to be able to work in color considering during foundations first semester we only work in black and white. I'm happy with how it came out, even though it was kind of frustrating at the beginning, but it was fun working as a class to try to figure out how to use the pen tool. Also even though I have some bright colors in this project I now wish I would've used even more colors.

Tuesday Lecture Series

Today was another one of the Tuesday lecture series. I liked the guys work that he did, but then again I couldn't really get into it. I know he couldn't help it, but his heavy accent made it hard for me to understand what he was trying to say. At first when he was showing the artwork on the slide I thought it was his work, but then when he said "Well that's enough of that, I'll show you my work now..." I became confused. I assume he was showing work of other artists in his area. Once he started showing his work I liked what I saw for the most part. I liked his animations and the graphic nature of his work. Also I thought it to be interesting that a person could tell what nationality he was just by looking at his work. I also noticed that he really really liked planes. Almost half of his work had planes in it, in many different ways and with many different meanings to them. Overall I was pretty interested in his work! I' m looking forward to the next lecture.

Currency

This is the currency I am pretty sure I will be working with for the next project. I really like how it's not only currency in Italy, but it was also used as a postage stamp. I'm not very fond of the not so original male profile on the one side of this currency, but I really like the side with the advertisement. What dollar bill today has an advertisement on it's one side? I think it would be fun to put a different face and make up my own advertisement and so on. I'm excited to be moving on to this project as well. I really did like the portrait project, but it was very frustrating at first but now since I know what I'm doing after having to practice a lot , I Feel like this project will move along a little smoother and better. I'm also excited to learn more tools and to hopefully excel more at using illustrator.

Tuesday Lecture

So today's lecture...I'm not sure what to say about it. I liked it but then again I didn't seem to connect with it. I was disappointed that he didn't show any of his art work, and he didn't really explain what he does. I'm not sure if he thought we all already knew what he does, which some of the other students might have, but I didn't have any clue at all. Which not having a clue could be my fault but, still, even if he just showed maybe five things he has done I would've figured it out. He also had a very strong opinion about things which I did really like. He really did say whatever he wanted. Also he kept me interested even with the little material he had to show which was very surprising to me. Usually I need a lot of visual stimuli to keep me focused, but not this time. Also his opinion on how some people who have money don't deserve to even have pockets , or better yet pants to wear was a very good point and I totally agree with it. Overall he had some good points and was a good speaker , but I would've liked to see some more of his work.

Overview of my Tyler life

So far at Tyler it's been a pretty interesting experience. I have my doubts sometimes about how much more stress I can take, but then when I see the final result of a project I remember why I love art. I just can't wait until the Tyler campus is on main campus. The shuttles are probably my main annoyance besides...well the work ...but that was expected. The shuttle buses weren't expected at all. It gets very difficult to get on a bus with a portfolio, tackle box, books, and well myself. I love my classes though. There's a few I could do without, but that's always going to be in a school students life. Philly is for me in all ways shapes and forms. I love the atmosphere and being able to take a train or walk to wherever I need to go. Also the people here no matter what people say are the best people ever. I love how the freshman class is bonded by the fact that we're always together working on art, and the classes are small so we get to really know each other. I'm just really excited to see what else is in store for me here. I really can't believe I'm here, it's been a vision of mine, but I never thought it'd come true. I plan on embraces every second of it.
